การใช้ the กับชื่อต่าง ๆ เช่น ชื่อแม่น้ำ อ่าว ภูเขา สะพาน เป็นต้น

ชื่อแม่น้ำ อ่าว ภูเขา สะพาน ชื่อคน ชื่อประเทศ ต่าง ๆ เหล่านี้ เรียกว่าเป็นชื่อเฉพาะ หรือ คำนามชี้เฉพาะ หรือวิสามานยนาม หรือ Proper Nouns ซึ่งถือว่าเป็นคำนามที่ใช้เรียกชื่อ คน สัตว์ และสิ่งของต่าง ๆ คำนามชี้เฉพาะพวกนี้เมื่ออยู่ในประโยคภาษาอังกฤษ จะต้องใช้ตัวอักษรตัวใหญ่ขึ้นต้นเสมอ ไม่ว่าจะอยู่ต้นประโยค หรือส่วนไหนของประโยคก็ตาม เช่น สุดา (ชื่อคน) สามสี (ชื่อแมว) Bangkok (ชื่อเมือง) Mount Everest (ชื่อภูเขา) เป็นต้น

คำนามชี้เฉพาะเหล่านี้ ส่วนใหญ่ไม่ต้องมี article นำหน้า แต่บางคำก็มี the นำหน้า ทำให้สับสนอยู่มากเหมือนกัน กฏเกณฑ์ข้างล่าง แต่ละอย่างก็มีข้อยกเว้น จริง ๆ ต้องดูว่า ชื่อแต่ละชื่อ หน่วยงาน/องค์กร เจ้าของ หรือความนิยม เขาใช้กันอย่างไร ก็ใช้ตามนั้น

หลักโดยทั่วไป

1. โดยทั่วไป ตามปกติ เราจะไม่ใช้ the นำหน้า ชื่อเฉพาะ ที่เป็นเอกพจน์ เช่น ชื่อคน ชื่อสัตว์ ชื่ออาคาร ชื่อร้านค้า เป็นต้น เราจะเรียกชื่อเฉย ๆ ไม่ต้องมีอะไรนำหน้า เช่น Suda Rakdee, 
2. หลักกว้าง ๆ โดยทั่วไปอีกอย่างคือ ถ้าชื่อ มีคำว่า of หรือ มีคำที่เกี่ยวกับองค์กร เช่น institute, foundation หรือ orcorporation จะมี the นำหน้า เช่น The city of New Orleans, The Republic of Korea, the City University of New York, The Fulbright Foundation, the Chase Corporation, The Commonwealth of Virginia เป็นต้น 

การใช้ หรือ ไม่ใช้ the นำหน้าชื่อเฉพาะ

1. ชื่อคน และการเรียกชื่อคนพร้อมตำแหน่ง ไม่ต้องมี the นำหน้า เช่น
   Suda, Suda Rakdee, Mrs Suda Rakdee, President Obama (ไม่ใช่ the President Obama), Captain Kerk, Doctor Well, Professor Smith, Uncle Jack, Aunt Jill เป็นต้น
   ยกเว้น
   
   • การเรียกนามสกุลคนมากกว่า 1 คน (เป็นพหูพจน์) ต้องมี the นำหน้า เช่น the Clintons (มี -s) อาจจะหมายถึง Bill Clinton และ Hillary Clinton (ถ้าเป็นนามสกุลแต่ละคนจะไม่มี -s) หรืออาจจะรวมถึงพี่น้องคนอื่น ๆ ด้วย ก็ได้
   • ในกรณีต้องการหาใครคนใดคนหนึ่งที่ชื่อนี้ ก็สามารถใช้ a นำหน้าได้ เช่น a Mr. David Jones
2. ชื่อบริษัท หน่วยงาน องค์กร ธนาคาร โดยปกติ เราจะไม่ใช้ the นำหน้า เช่น
   Thai Airways, Microsoft, Mitsubishi, Samsung Electronics, Citibank เป็นต้น
   ยกเว้น
   
   • ชื่อบริษัทที่จดทะเบียน มีคำว่า the นำหน้าเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของชื่อ ก็ให้มี the เพราะเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของชื่อ ได้ เช่น The Post Publishing Public Co., Ltd
   • บริษัท/องค์กร ต่อไปนี้ มี the นำหน้า the Ford Motor Company, the Mitsubishi Manufacturing Company, the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the World Bank, the Bank of New York.
3. ชื่อโรงแรม ชื่อรีสอร์ท ชื่อร้านอาหาร โดยปกติ เมื่อมีคำว่า hotel หรือ resort หรือ cafe หรือ restaurant ต่อท้าย จะมี the นำหน้า เช่น the Hua-Hin Grand Hotel, the Ritz Hotel, the Cholapruek Resort, the Heart Healthy Cafe เป็นต้น
   ยกเว้น
   
   • ไม่ใช้ the ถ้ามีคำว่า Hotel นำหน้า เช่น Hotel San Diego
   • ชื่อโรงแรม ชื่อรีสอร์ท ชื่อธนาคาร ชื่อร้านอาหาร ที่ตั้งชื่อตามชื่อผู้ก่อตั้ง สังเกตว่า อาจจะมีเครื่องหมาย 's อยู่ในชื่อด้วย จะไม่ใช้ the นำหน้า เช่น Steve's Hotel, Joe's Cafe, McDonalds เป็นต้น
   • ในกรณีที่มีร้าน ที่มีชื่อเดียวกันหลายแห่งและต้องการระบุให้ชัดเจน ต้องมี the นำหน้า แต่ต้องมีคำมาขยายด้วย เช่น the McDonalds next to the gas station
4. ชื่อถนน ไม่มี the นำหน้า เช่น on Petchakasem Road, Main St., Astoria Blvd., Jewel Ave, Fifth Avenue เป็นต้น (ไม่ใช่ the Fifth Avenue แต่ถ้า the fifth avenue หมายถึง ถนนลำดับที่ 5 ซึ่งไม่ใช่ชื่อถนน - จะสังเกตเห็นว่า ไม่ได้ขึ้นด้วยตัวอักษรตัวใหญ่)
5. ชื่ออาคาร หรือชื่อสถานที่ มี 2 คำ คำแรกเป็นชื่อคน หรือชื่อสถานที่ มักจะไม่มี the นำหน้า เช่น at Kennedy Airport, Alexander Palace, St Paul's Cathedral, Heathrow Airport, Don Muang Airport, Waterloo Station, Edinburgh Castle เป็นต้น
6. ชื่อมหาวิทยาลัย ชื่อโรงเรียน
   • ชื่อ มหาวิทยาลัย โรงเรียน ส่วนใหญ่ไม่มี the นำหน้า เช่น Suankularb Wittayalai School, Lincoln Elementary School, Ford High School, Oregon State University, Yale University, Harvard University, Princeton University เป็นต้น
   • ถ้ามีคำว่า of รวมอยู่ในชื่อ หรือขึ้นต้นด้วยคำว่า University ให้มี the นำหน้า เช่น The University of Minnesota, The College of St. Catherine, The Massachusetts Institute of Technology 
   
   • ยกเว้น The Ohio State University, The Florida State University
   • ถ้าชื่อแรก เป็นชื่อคน หรือชื่อสถานที่ จะไม่ใช้ the นำหน้า เช่น Carleton College, South Dakota State University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
   • โดยสรุปคือ ไม่ค่อยแน่นอน ต้องตรวจสอบจากแหล่ง เช่น เว็บไซต์ ว่า แต่ละแห่งใช้อย่างไร
7. ชื่อสะพาน มี the นำหน้า เช่น the Brooklyn Bridge, the George Washington Bridge, the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Albert Bridge
   ยกเว้น
   London Bridge, Tower Bridge, Waterloo Bridge, Westminster Bridge
8. ชื่อเมือง ชื่อรัฐ ชื่อจังหวัด ไม่มี the เช่น in Ratchaburi, Illinois, Edison, Philadelphia
   ยกเว้น
   the Hague (กรุงเฮก ประเทศเนเธอแลนด์)
9. ชื่อภูเขาเป็นลูก ๆ (Mount + ชื่อ) ไม่มี the นำหน้า เช่น Mount Everest, Mount Sinai, Mount Fuji
   ยกเว้น
   ถ้าเป็นชื่อเทือกเขา ทิวเขา ต้องมี the นำหน้า เช่น  the Andes, the Alps, the Himalayas
10. ชื่อประเทศ
    
    • ชื่อประเทศ ที่ประกอบด้วยคำคำเดียว จะไม่มี the เช่น in China, Thailand, Argentina, Ireland, Iraq
    • ชื่อประเทศ มีคำว่า States หรือ Kingdom หรือ Republic จะมี the นำหน้า เช่น the US (the United States of America) the United Kingdom หรือ the UK the French Republic เป็นต้น
    • ชื่อประเทศที่เป็นพหูพจน์ มี s ต่อท้าย จะมี the นำหน้า เช่น the Netherlands, the Philippines
    • ชื่อประเทศพร้อมคำขยายทางการเมือง ให้ใช้ the นำหน้า เช่น The People's Republic of China, The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region
    • ชื่อประเทศที่รวมทิศอยู่ในชื่อ ไม่ต้องมี the นำหน้า เช่น North Korea, South Korea เป็นต้น
11. ชื่อคลอง แม่น้ำ ชื่อทะเล ชื่อมหาสมุทร มี the นำหน้า เช่น the Chao Praya River, the Pearl River, the Suez Canal, the River Nile, the South China Sea, the Pacific Ocean
12. ชื่อทะเลสาปที่ขึ้นต้นด้วย Lake ไม่มี the นำหน้า เช่น Lake Ontario, Lake Superior
    ยกเว้น
    ถ้าเป็นพหูพจน์ มี the นำหน้า เช่น the Great Lakes (ชื่อกลุ่มทะเลสาป ประกอบด้วย Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, และ Lake Ontario)
13. ชื่ออ่าว (Bay) ถ้ามีคำว่า Bay ตามหลังชื่อ จะไม่มี the เช่น San Francisco Bay
    ยกเว้น
    ถ้า คำว่า Bay มาก่อนหน้า ให้มี the นำด้วย เช่น the Bay of Fundy, the Bay of Bengal
14. ชื่ออ่าว (Gulf) มีคำว่า the นำหน้า เช่น the Persian Gulf,  the Gulf of Thailand
15. ชื่อคาบสมุทร มีคำว่า the นำหน้า เช่น the Arabian Peninsula
16. ชื่อเกาะ จะไม่มี the นำหน้า เช่น Fiji Islands, Prince Edward Island
    ยกเว้น
    ถ้าเป็นชื่อหมู่เกาะ จะมี the นำหน้า เช่น the Virgin Islands, the British Isles
17. ชื่อทะเลทราย ชื่อป่า จะมี the นำหน้า เช่น the Gobi Desert, the Black Forest
18. ชื่อทวีป ไม่มี the นำหน้า เช่น in Asia, America, Africa
19. ชื่อรางวัล  เหรียญตรา ต่าง ๆ จะมี the นำหน้า เช่น the Nobel Prize, the Pulitzer Prize, the Pulitzer Prize for Music, the Academy Awards, the Academy Award for Best Actor
20. ชื่อหนังสือพิมพ์ จะใช้ the นำหน้า เช่น The Nation, The Bangkok Post, The Times, The Washington Post
21. อาคารที่เป็นที่รู้จักอย่างกว้างขวาง และชิ้นงานศิลปะ จะมี the นำหน้า เช่น the Empire State Building, the Taj Mahal, the Mona Lisa, the Sunflowers
