การใช้ let, let's

เราคุ้นเคยกับคำว่า Let's เช่นพูดว่า Let's go now. = ไปกันเลยตอนนี้ Let's go for a walk. = ไปเดินเล่นกันดีกว่า

แต่คำว่า Let ยังมีอีกหลายความหมาย รวมทั้งมีสำนวนเกี่ยวกับ Let ที่น่าสนใจอีกด้วย

ความหมายที่ 1: อนุญาต

รูปแบบประโยคคือ => let + object + infinitive without to เช่น
She let me look at the photos. (ไม่ใช่  She let me to look at the photos.)
เธอให้ผม/ฉันดูรูปภาพพวกนั้น
การใช้ในความหมายว่าอนุญาต เราจะไม่ใช้ let ในกรณีที่เป็น Passive Voice
เราพูดว่า
They didn't let us take photographs inside the theater.
We weren't allowed to take photographs inside the theater.
อย่าใช้
We weren't let (to) take photographs...

ความหมายที่ 2 เสนอแนะ/ชักชวน

พูดว่า/ใช้  Let us ... ในกรณีที่เป็นทางการมาก ๆ เช่นในการเขียน หรือ กล่าวสนุทรพจน์
Let us remember all those who have died in this terrible conflict.
ขอเราจงจำพวกเขาเหล่านั้นซึ่งเสียชีวิตในความขัดแย้งที่เลวร้ายนี้
We must forgive, but let us not forget, what happened on that day ten years ago.
เราต้องให้อภัย แต่ต้องไม่ลืมสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้น ในวันนั้น เมื่อสิบปีก่อน

พูดว่า/ใช้  Let's..... ใช้แบบไม่เป็นทางการ เช่น พูดกับเพื่อน หรือในโอกาสที่ไม่เป็นทางการ เช่น ไปซื้อของ
รูปแบบประโยคคือ => let + object + infinitive without to เช่น
It's midday. Let's stop now and have some lunch, shall we?
เที่ยงพอดี พวกเราหยุดพักกินข้าวกลางวันกัน ดีไหม?

พูดว่า  Let me ..... เพื่อเสนอตัวเอง ขันอาสาทำสิ่งใดสิ่งหนึ่ง
Let me move these books out of your way.
ขอผม/ฉันย้ายหนังสือพวกนี้ให้พ้นทางคุณนะ
Let me help you with the books.
ให้ผมช่วย(ถือ)หนังสือพวกนั้นนะครับ

Let's มีรูปปฏิเสธอยู่ 2 แบบ คือ Let's not .... และ Don't let... ทั้งสองคำนี้ คนชอบใช้ Let's not ... มากกว่า เช่น
Let’s not argue about money. We can share the costs.
เราอย่ามาโต้เถึยงเรื่องเงินกันเลย เราช่วยกันจ่ายได้
Don’t let’s throw away the good books with the damaged ones. We can sell them.
เราอย่าเอาหนังสือดีทิ้งไปรวมกับหนังสือที่เสียหายเลย เราขายมันได้
Do not let us deceive ourselves that our economic problems can be easily solved.
ขอเราอย่าหลอกตัวเองเลยว่า ปัญหาด้านเศรษฐกิจ(เป็นเรื่องจิ๊บจ๊อย) แก้ไขได้ง่าย

มีสำนวน เกี่ยวกับ Let ที่น่าสนใจ เช่น

to let down = ทำให้ใครคนใดคนหนึ่งต้องผิดหวัง เช่น

I promised to do it, I can't let her down.
ผมได้สัญญาแล้วว่าจะทำ ผมจะไม่ทำให้เธอผิดหวัง
They let us down badly by not completing the work on time.
พวกนั้นทำให้เราผิดหวังเป็นอย่างมาก(badly) ที่ไม่สามารถทำให้เสร็จทันตามกำหนดเวลา

to let in for = เข้าไปมีส่วนร่วมกับงานที่ยาก หรือ ไม่สนุก เช่น This job is very hard. I didn't realise what I was letting myself in for.
งานนี้มันยาก ผมไม่เข้าใจเลยว่าเข้ามาทำทำไม She didn't realise how much work she was letting herself in for doing this course.
เธอไม่เข้าใจว่าเลยว่าต้องทำงานหนักแค่ไหนในการเรียนวิชานี้
to let in on = บอกความลับแก่ใครคนใดคนหนึ่ง เช่น I don't know what they're doing. They wouldn't let me in on their plans.
ผมไม่รู้ว่าพวกนั้นกำลังทำอะไร เขาไม่ยอมบอกอะไรเกี่ยวกับแผนของเขา She let me in on her secret. She's getting married!
เธอบอกความลับให้ผม/ฉันรู้ เธอกำลังจะแต่งงาน!
to let off = ไม่ลงโทษ ยกโทษให้ทั้งที่ทำผิด He was caught smoking in the office but they let him off because it was the first time.
เขาถูกจับได้ว่าสูบบุหรี่ในที่ทำงาน แต่พวกเขา(คณะผู้บริหาร)ปล่อยไม่ลงโทษเพราะเป็นการกระทำครั้งแรก
I'll let you off this time but if you do it again, you'll be severely punished.
ผมจะไม่ลงโทษคุณในครั้งนี้ แต่ถ้าทำอีกครั้ง คุณจะถูกลงโทษอย่างรุนแรง

to let off = อีกความหมายหนึ่งคือ อนุญาตให้ไม่ต้องทำในสิ่งที่ควรทำ เช่น I owed him some money but he let me off. I didn't have to pay him back.
ผมเป็นหนี้เขา แต่เขาไม่ต้องให้ผมใช้เงินคืน ผมไม่ต้องให้เงินเขา I was supposed to work until 10 pm but my boss let me off at 9.
ผมต้องทำงานถึง 4 ทุ่ม แต่หัวหน้าอนุญาตให้กลับตอน 3 ทุ่ม
to let up = หยุด หรือลดความรุนแรงลง เช่น We'll go out for a walk if the rain lets up.
เราจะไปเดินเล่น ถ้าฝนหยุด The pressure at work is non-stop. It never lets up.
แรงกดดันที่ที่ทำงานมีตลอดเวลา ไม่เคยหยุด
